Old
Rebuilt German bowl-back This is an
old, German deep-bowled instrument from the early 20th century.
It is in good condition
after restoration and rebuild, with a fairly wide fingerboard. There
is no label except mine..
This instrument is now fully restored and playable. There is a
new top in cedar.
It has a 24-piece rosewood bowl back with a couple of small seam repairs. It
has the original
re-levelled fingerboard,
with mostly original bar frets. The tuners
and tail, are originals, the bridge is new. The mandolin has
been completely refinished with shellac and Tru-oil for protection.
It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical
strings, and is now playing well with
a good round, warm sound with fair sustain and good volume.
It has
an
easy playing action. Other
than cleaning,
I have repaired as follows… 1) made and fitted a new top in cedar; 2)
fitted Italian-style edging in mop and rosewood; 3) repaired some open
seams in the bowl; 4) refitted the original fingerboard, replacing
missing frets; 5) finished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish,
lightly on the top; 6) fitted a new bridge and scratchplate, 7) strung
and set up.
