Old
named Italian bowl-back This is an
old, Italian bowl-back
mandolin from the early 20th century. It is in good
condition after minimal restoration, though work has obviously been done
on it previously. There
is a label which says … Fratelli
Bellini Allievi
di Montaldi (student
of Montaldi) Sorrento presso Napoli
(near) This
instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with
no repairs. It has a 19-piece
rosewood bowl back with perhaps 1 old seam repair. It has
a rosewood fingerboard with brass T-frets, probably an old replacement.
The tuners
and tail look original, the bridge probably new. It has evidently been
refinished throughout with a modern varnish.
It has
been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with
a bright, melodious sound with
good sustain and volume. It has
an
easy playing action. Other
than cleaning,
I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired and tidied up an old seam
repair, and reglued another seam; 2) levelled and dressed the frets; 3)
refitted the bridge; and 4) restrung and set up.
