Old
mando-cello
This is an old, mandocello, in good condition
after restoration. It is currently set up as a 10 string liauto
contabile. It has had previous work, as the neck and head are obviously
not original. There is a label , but whether this is the original
builder or the luthier that did the conversion is not clear. Eduard Vondracek Hudebni Nastroje a Struny Praha, Stepanska, 4 (Translation:
Musical Instruments and Strings, Prague in the Czech Republic.)
This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top
is sound with no
repairs. It
has a superb 25-piece rosewood bowl back
with
a couple of seam repairs. It has the new
ebony fingerboard and modern frets. The tuners, tail and bridge are original. It has been partly
refinished with shellac and Tru-oil.
It has been restrung with silver wound strings and is now playing well with
a deep booming sound with
excellent sustain and volume. It has
an easy playing action.
Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired several
open seams in the bowl and reinforced within; 2) repaired the split
scratchplate; 3) replaced missing MOP around the sound hole; 4)
restained the heavily scuffed neck; 5) made and fitted a new
fingerboard; 6) refitted and repaired the original bridge; 7) revarished
throughout with shellac and tru-oil; and 8) strung and set up.
