Old French fluted bowl-back

This is an old, bowl-back mandolin, French-built probably in the 1930s. It is in excellent condition after minimal restoration.  There is a top stamp which says…

P. Mangenot

(Installed in Mirecourt in 1890, Paul Mangenot sold the name to Laberte in 1928. Instruments pre 1928 have a label inside, and after a top stamp.)

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with no repairs. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back with no repairs. It has a new inlaid concert fingerboard in ebony set on a shim. The tuners, tail, and bridge are original. It retains the original French polished finished throughout. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings and is now playing well with a bright rounded sound, and an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) made and fitted a new fingerboard in ebony and bone nut to replace the original very thin one, and provide some bridge room; 2) touched up varnish around repair; 3) reglued some loose edging; and 4) strung and set up
