Old named Italian bowl-back This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late 19th or early 20th century. It is in fair condition after restoration, though there is evidence of a previous repair. There is a label which says … Luigi Euvingino Prima Fabbrica di Mandolini Via Dante Milano This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with scuffs and scratches of use. It has an excellent 29-piece rosewood bowl back with seam repairs. It has the original rosewood fingerboard with German silver bar-frets. The tuners, bridge and tail look original. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and a modern varnish. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, melodious sound with good sustain and volume. It has a fairly easy playing action.Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) cleaned the top; 2) replaced missing edging pieces; 3) levelled the rosewood fretboard; 4) levelled and dressed the original German silver bar-frets; 5) repaired a hole in the bowl and reglued a couple of open seams; 6) repaired trim around the clasp and sides; 7) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil, to replace old finish; 8) refitted the original nut and bridge; 9) fitted new anti-vibration felt, restrung and set up. |
