Old French flatback mandolin This is an
old flatback mandolin. It has a longish scale. It is in good condition after restoration. It has the remains of a top stamp
which would have said...... Vesuvienne
It has a slightly domed back and
sides which seem to be rosewood. The spruce top is now sound with 1
small repairs to the centre join. It has the original furniture and
fingerboard, and repaired bridge. It has been refinished throughout
with shellac and tru-oil varnish, a hard, light, modern varnish. It has
been set up to be easy to play, with a fairly easy action. It plays with
a good strong sound and plenty of sustain! Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows; 1) repaired 1 short shrinkage splits in the top; 2) repaired a split and reglued the loose back; 3) replaced a lot of missing edging pieces front and back; 4) refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil; 5) levelled the original frets; 6) repaired and refitted the shelf bridge in ebony; and 7) strung and set up. |
