Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late 19th century. It is in good condition after restoration.  There is a label which says …

Fratelli Pascale & Gaetano Esposito

Fabricanti di Strumenti Armonici

Allievo’ dei Fratelli Vinaccia

Napoli

Vico Colonne Cariati 36

Anno 1897

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with one shrinkage repair. It has a 17-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 invisible seam repair. It has a replacement ebony concert fingerboard. The tuners are original, the tail probably not, and the ebony shelf bridge new . It retains its French polished finish throughout except around repairs. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, melodious sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) cleaned and repaired a shrinkage crack in the top; 3) made and fitted a new ebony concert fingerboard; 4) repaired 1 open seam in the bowl and reinforced inside; 5) refinished around repairs with shellac and tru-oil varnish; 6) made and fitted a new ebony bridge and refitted the bone nut; and 7) restrung and set up.
