Home    Mandolin Fingerboard    Construction

Fingerboard  These are all fashioned from ebony (or rosewood), and planed to a slight angle, to allow for the thickness of the bass strings.

The fingerboards are shaped to thickness, with a plane and cabinet scraper.

Fret slots are carefully scribed and cut whilst the blank is still rectangular, and any inlay indents are made.

Here a pre-cut and inlaid fingerboard, which is not rectangular, has been set up in a jig, to allow fret slots to be cut at exact right angles to the centre-line.

After gluing to the neck, the frets are finally fitted to the board. The overlong ends are clipped off, and the fret ends dressed.
