Old named Italian mandolin (617)  @ 150 euros

Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, entry level, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 1900s. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says…

Ceasare Montaldi

Fabbrica di Mandoline

Deposito nella Inghilterra: Alban Voigt & Co.

(not clear if Ceasare Montaldi is related to the more well-known Giovanni Montaldi, but both sold in the UK through Alban Voigt, perhaps yes!! as both share the unusual 15 rib bowl pattern))

This instrument is now fully restored. The top is sound with a shrinkage split repair, left of centre. It has a 15-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 short repair. It has the new rosewood fingerboard, with new brass frets. The tuners, tail and bridge are all originals. The top has been lightly refinished with Tru-oil for protection, elsewhere it retains the original French polished finish. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a superb round ringing sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) made and fitted a new fingerboard; 2) repaired a shrinkage split in the top; 3) repaired an open seam in the bowl; 4) fitted a new nut; and 5) refitted the original bridge.
