Old named Italian mandolin (500)  @ 400 euros new

Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late 19th century. It is in good condition after restoration. It is relatively rare as it is inlaid with a fluted bowl. There is a label which says…

Michele Maratea & Figli

Allievo di Vinaccia

Vicoletto Rosario a Portamedina N. 18

Napoli (Italia) 188?

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is now sound with no splits. It has a superb 25-piece fluted rosewood bowl back with some seam repairs. It has the original new semi-concert fingerboard set on a shim. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, round, ringing sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) made and fitted a new fingerboard; 2) replaced/renewed missing/damaged purfling and edging; 3) repaired open back seams; 4) repaired damaged tulipwood edging; 5) repaired the scratchplate; 6) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish; 7) made and fitted a new bridge; 8) strung and set up.
