Old Named Italian bowlback  ( 643)  @ 150 euros new

Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century. It is in good condition after minimal restoration. There is a label which says…

Luigi Tamagno

Mandolini "Estudiantina"

17 Via San Felice

Anno 1924 Naopli

(depositaire Fontana, 49 Passage de Trargue, Lyon.)

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with 1 small shrinkage repair. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back with no repairs. It has the original rosewood semi-concert fingerboard and frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. It has original finish throughout but with Tru-oil on the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a light, bright sound with fair sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1)replaced missing MOP edging; 2) treated the top with Tru0oil for protection; 3) levelled and dressed the original frets; 4) made and fitted a new bridge; and 5) strung and set up.
