Old German rosewood bowl-back
This is an old, German-made, long-scale, rosewood, bowlback mandolin from the early to mid 20th century. It is in good condition after restoration. There is no label…
This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with2 shrinkage repairs. It has a superb 24-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 split repair. It has the original rosewood fingerboard and relevelled frets. The tuners, bridge and tail are originals. It has been refinished throughout but with shellac and Tru-oil. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a strong well-rounded sound with fair sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action, and strung with GHS ultra light strings.
Other than cleaning,I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired a little damage to the bowl; 2) repaired 2 shrinkage cracks in the top; 3) relevelled the original frets; 4) repaired damage to purfling and edging; 5) refitted the original bridge; 6) replaced missing mop inlay; 7) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish; and 8) strung and set up.
