Old bowl-back

This is an old, bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says …

C. L. Andre

Musical Instrument Depot

Triangle House, Triangle, Hackney, London

This is an unusual instrument, as its styling and method of construction is definitely not Italian, German or English, so its origin is uncertain, and the label probably indicates the retail outlet.

The instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with NO repairs. It has a 17-piece rosewood bowl back with some seam repairs. It has the original fingerboard and frets in ebony. The tuners, bridge and tail are originals. It has been refinished throughout, with shellac and a coat of Tru-oil for protection on the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a fine, ringing sound with fair sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired some open seams in the bowl; 2) replaced missing or broken tuner buttons; 3) levelled the original frets; 4) reglued some loose veneer; 5) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish; and 6) strung and set up.
