Old Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late 19th or early 20th century. It is in good condition after restoration, including a fairly wide, new semi-concert fingerboard. There is a label which says …

Domenico Zanoni

Fabbrica di strumenti harmonici

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with NO major repairs, small repairs to edging. It has a 23-piece rosewood bowl back with a couple of seam repairs. It has a new rosewood fingerboard and 23 frets. It had a loose neck, which has now been securely refitted. The tuners, tail are originals, the bridge original and refitted. It retains most of the original finish, touched up around repairs, with a coat of Tru-oil for protection on the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright rounded sound, and an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired open seams in the bowl and re-enforced inside; 2) reset the neck securely; 3) fitted a new semi-concert fingerboard and bone nut with 23 frets; 4) applied a coat of Tru-oil varnish to the top for protection; 5) refitted the original bridge; 6) strung and set up.
