26. Old named neapolitan mandolin  (681)  @ 150 euros

Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century, made in the de Meglio style. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a handwritten label which says…

Botham Clasar/Ceasar (unclear really)

This instrument is now fully restored. The top is sound with a repair right side. It has a 17-piece rosewood bowl back NO repairs. It has the original ebony fingerboard, with brass bar frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge and tensioner new. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil for protection. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a superb attacking sound and good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) replaced the missing tulipwood edging; 2) replaced the damaged, top wood right side; 3) re-levelled the ebony fingerboard and refitted original frets; 4) reglued loose scratchplate; 5) removed old distressed varnish and refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil; and 6) made and fitted new ebony bridge and tensioner, strung and set up.
