14. Mureda bowlback mandolin (820)   @ 150 euros  new

Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says …

F. de Mureda

Fabbricante di Strumenti Armonici

Anno 190_

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with 1 shrinkage repair. It has a 17-piece rosewood bowl back with 2 seam repairs. It has the original rosewood fingerboard. The tuners, tail and bridge are originals. It retains original finish throughout except on the top, which has a coat of Tru-oil for protection. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, melodious sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) replaced missing edging; 2) levelled and dressed original frets on the rosewood fingerboard; 3) repaired a shrinkage slit in the lower section of the top; 4) finished the top with tru-oil varnish; 5) repaired 2 open seams in the bowl; 6) refitted the bridge and a new nut; and 7) restrung and set up.
