Old
Italian rosewood bowl-back This is an
old, bowl-back mandolin from
the early 20th century. It is now in good
condition after restoration. There
is the remains of a label which says… Prima
Fabrica di Mandolini Luigi
Euvingino Napoli
& Milano
This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top
is sound with
no repairs, though a couple of deep
scratches. It has a 17 piece rosewood bowl back
with repairs. It
has a new semi-concert fingerboard
in rosewood with modern frets. The tuners,
bridge, and tail are originals. It has been refinished throughout, and a coat of Tru-oil protects
the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light
GHS bronze wound classical strings and is now playing well with
a bright
well-balanced sound, and an easy playing action
and good sustain. Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired several open seams in the bowl; 2) made and fitted a new fingerboard in rosewood; 3) refinished with shellac and tru-oil; 4) cleaned and lightly finished the top; 5) cleaned and lubricated the tuners; 6) refitted the bridge and bone nut; and 7) added felt, strung, and set up. |
