10. Large German bowlback mandolin    (810)  @  150 euros new
Larger photos are available on request.

This is an old, solidly built, mandolin, probably German, from perhaps the mid 20th century, with a fairly wide fingerboard and large bowl similar to a Suzuki. It is in good condition after restoration. There is no makers label.....

This instrument is now fully restored and playable. The top is sound with No repairs. It has a 24-piece, stained maple bowl back and sides. The original fingerboard and frets are now clean and level. The tuners, tail and bridge are all originals. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish, as the original finish was flaking off. It has been restrung with light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with an easy action, and a deep, strong, round sound, with good sustain and volume.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) levelled the f/b and frets; 2) repaired 2 open seams in the bowl; 3) removed all old varnish and refinished with shellac and tru-oil varnish; 4) cleaned and revarnished the top with tru-oil; 5) replaced a missing tuner button; 6) refitted the bridge; 7) restrung and set up.
