10. Domeback mandolin    (719)  @  100 euros new

Old German dome-back mandolin

This is an old, German-built, dome-back mandolin, perhaps from mid to late C20th. It is in fair condition after minimal restoration. It has a relatively narrow fretboard, so would be ideal for a lady's hand. There isno makers label....

This instrument is now fully cleaned and playable. The top is sound with a small repair to the centre join. It has a 7-piece domed back in stained maple and maybe a fruit wood, with no repairs. It has the original fingerboard and relevelled brass frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge refitted and tensioner new. Only the top has been refinished lightly with shellac and Tru-oil. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a good, full sound with good sustain and fair volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows; 1) relevelled the frets, 2) repaired an open centre join in the top; 3) refinished the top with shellac and Tru-oil, and 4) refitted the original bridge with a new bone saddle and a tensioner; and 5) strung and set up.
