Old Russian 4-string soprano domra

This is an old domra, probably built in Russia. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label, see picture insert…

This instrument is now fully playable. The top is sound with several repairs. It has a solid 7-piece bowl back NO repairs. It has the original fingerboard, and re-levelled frets. The tuners are probably not the originals. It has been refinished throughout. It has been restrung with light GHS strings, and is tuned to GDAE like a mandolin. It is playing well with a light, bright sound with good volume and sustain. It has an easy action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) rebuilt the collapsed top, replacing weak struts; 2) fitted new purfling and edging; 3) fitted a bone piece at the tail to prevent strings cutting into the top; 4) levelled and dressed the frets; 5) refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil varnish; 6) made and fitted a new ebony and bone compensated bridge; and 7) strung and set up.
