Old Bohm-style Waldzither – Preston tuners

This is an old Waldzither, made in Germany with Preston tuners. It has no label inside but probably dates from the 1930-40s...

No label except mine

It has the original rosewood fingerboard and frets. The spruce top is now sound with 1 shrinkage repair. The flat back is sound with centre strip. The tail is originals the tuners a period replacement. The rosewood and bone inlaid bridge is new. I have now fitted strap buttons at the heel. The instrument has been refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil. It has been strung as a trad waldzither in CGGCCEEGG and is now playing well with a full, ringing, sonorous sound and a light action.

The waldzither will be supplied with a tuning key. A string winder is available for creating replacement double loop-end strings if required…(15 euros)

Other than cleaning, I have carried out the following work on this instrument: 1) repaired 1 shrinkage crack in the top; 2) levelled the original frets; 3) refitted the loose back adding a centre strip to fit; 4) newly fitted period tuner to replace the lost original; 5) restained and varnished throughout; 6) strap buttons fitted at the heel; and 7) made and fitted a new nut and bridge; and 8) strung and set up.

NB. the instrument can be retuned in a variety of different ways.
