Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century, with a fairly wide fingerboard and large bowl. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a topstamp which says …

Silvestri

CATANIA

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with repairs. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 small repairs. It has the original fingerboard with brass bar frets set on a shim. The tuners, tail and bridge are originals. It has been refinished throughout. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a bright, ringing sound with good sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) small repair to a damaged rib and neck veneer; 2) repaired 3 shrinkage splits in the top; 3) set the f/b on a shim & levelled and dressed the frets; 4) replaced missing edging; 5) refinished throughout with shellac & finished the top for protection with Tru-oil; 6) refitted original bridge; and 5) strung and set up.
