Old named Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late 19th or early 20th century. It has an unusually wide fingerboard, and is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says…

Carlo Giuseppe Picino

Fabbrica e Deposito di Strumenti

Musicalia Corda

di Naopli

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with repairs. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 major repair. It has a new rosewood semi-concert fingerboard and frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. It has been refinished throughout with shellac, but with Tru-oil on the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a light, bright sound with fair sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired a major shrinkage split in the top; 2) replaced a lot of missing edging; 3) made and fitted a new fingerboard; 4) repaired open seams in the bowl; 5) refinished with shellac and tru-oil; 6) installed a new bone nut and rosewood bridge; and 7) strung and set up.
