Old named Italian bowl-back
This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the late19th century, with a lovely wide fingerboard, made by D'Isanto and Agara, students of Vinaccia. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says…
Pasquale D'Isanto & Pasquale Angara
Allievi di Vinaccia
Fabbricanti di Strumenti Armonici
Corso Garibaldi No 169 (inked in after)
This instrument is now fully restored and playable. The top is sound but has2 small repairs. It has a 17-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 small seam repair. It has a new concert fingerboard in ebony, with 23 modern frets. The tuners and tail guard, are originals, the bridge and tail pins new. The top has been lightly refinished with Tru-oil for protection, elsewhere it retains the original French polished finish a little scuffed in places. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a rounded, mellow sound with good sustain and fair volume. It has an easy playing action.
Other than cleaning,I have repaired as follows… 1) reglued the loose scratchplate; 2) repaired small shrinkage splits left side of top, and a small back seam separation; 3) replaced missing head decorations; 4) made and fitted a new concert fingerboard in ebony; 5) finished the top for protection with a coat of Tru-oil; 6) made and fitted a new bridge, modelled on the broken original; 7) fitted new tail pegs; and 8) strung and set up.
