2. Old Italian bowlback mandolin (824) @ 140 euros

Old Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century. It is in good condition after restoration. There is a label which says...

Prima Fabbricante di Mandolini

Napoli

Casa Principate con Deposito

Luigi Euvingino

6, Via Dante Milano.

(Euvingino appears to have been a distribution house for small luthiers, many appearing in France with this label)

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is now sound with a repair to the centre join, reinforced beneath. It has a 23-piece rosewood bowl back with 1 almost invisible seam repair. It has the original rosewood fingerboard and frets. The tuners and tail are originals, the r/w bridge new. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil. A coat of Tru-oil protects the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a strong, ringing sound with fair sustain and volume and an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) repaired damage to centre join in the top; 2) reglued 1 open seam in the bowl; 3) reglued the sound hole inlay; 4) repaired damage to the head/neck join; 5) levelled the original brass bar frets; 7) refinished throughout with a coat of tru-oil on the top; 8) made and fitted a new shelf bridge; and 9) strung and set up.
