2. Old Italian bowlback mandolin (822) @ 140 euros

Old Italian bowl-back

This is an old, Italian bowl-back mandolin from the early 20th century with a wide chunky neck. It is in fair condition after restoration. There is no label…

This instrument is now fully playable after restoration. The top is sound with no shrinkage repairs. It has a 21-piece rosewood bowl back again with 2 seam repairs. It has the original fingerboard in r/w with 17 brass bar frets now set on shim. The tuners, bridge and tail are originals. It has been refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish, and a coat or two of Tru-oil for protection on the top. It has been restrung with ultra-light GHS bronze wound classical strings, and is now playing well with a strong, ringing sound with fair sustain and volume. It has an easy playing action.

Other than cleaning, I have repaired as follows… 1) replaced several missing pieces of edging; 2) refitted the fingerboard on shim to aid playability and levelled frets; 3) replaced/repaired damaged/flaking neck veneer; 4) repaired damage to the soundhole edging; 5) repaired loose and damaged scratchplate; 6) closed two open seams in the bowl and reinforced inside; 7) refinished throughout with shellac and tru-oil varnish; 8) refitted bridge and nut; and 9) strung and set up.
