2. Old German Waldzither (746) @ 250 euros

Old German Waldzither

This is an old Waldzither, made in Germany in the early to mid-1900s. It has no label or name stamp, which is typical of instruments made in the old E. Germany.

It has the original rosewood finger-board with 17 re-levelled brass frets. The spruce top is sound but still has evidence of pick wear. The domed back is now sound, but with shrinkage repairs. I have also repaired and reinforced insect damage to the sides. The tuners and tail are originals, the bridge new. The instrument has been completely refinished with Tru-oil. It has been strung traditionally in open C: CGCEG, and is now playing well with good volume and sustain, a ringing, sonorous sound and a light action.

Other than cleaning, I have carried out the following work on this instrument: 1) repaired shrinkage splits and open seams in the back; 2) repaired some insect damage to the sides; 3) restained and refinished throughout with shellac and Tru-oil; 4) re-levelled and dressed the original frets; 5) fitted a new tailpiece; 6) refitted the glass bridge; and 7) strung and set up.

NB. the instrument can be retuned in a variety of different ways, though this could involve replacing the strings.
