The de Meglios are perhaps one of the most famous of the Italian bowl backs. Made throughout the late C19 and early C20, they varied in quality and design, but this is a commonly seen type. Notice the typical side holes seen in de Meglios and many copies of the style.

Another very famous Italian maker of bowl-backs, was Luigi Embergher, whose instruments are now highly prized. He made instruments in a great variety of standards, from the fairly basic model (left),  to concert models (right) and much more highly ornate models, which one wonders if they were ever intended to be played. Notice the German style head arrangement, which was not common amongst Italian makers.
This instrument was made by yet another celebrated maker in Italy, Umberto Ceccherini.
